Ruth Ellis

On 13 July 1955 Ruth Ellis became the last woman in Britain to be hanged. (She shot her former lover David Blakely). Her execution was controversial and added to the debate about the death penalty. In 2003 her relative appealed. But the Court of Appeal judges said there were no grounds for an appeal. She was properly convicted of murder according to the law at that time. And like it or not, hanging was the legal penalty for murder in 1955. My history of capital punishment
