Nostradamus

The notorious charlatan Nostradamus was born on 14 December 1503. His 'predictions' are deliberately obscure, with a bit of imagination you can always find some event in history in the last 500 years, somewhere that sounds like it might be a fulfillment of one of his predictions.

I first heard of Nostradamus in the 1970s. Since then every few years a new book about his 'predictions' is published. And every few years the interpretations of his 'predictions' change to try and make them fit actual events in the modern world. British prime minister Horace Walpole said 'the wisest prophets make sure of the event first'. That’s one way to do it Mr. Walpole or you could just make a prediction so vague or so obscure that something a bit like it is bound to happen sometime.

Raining Cats and Dogs

I came across the claim that the phrase 'raining cats and dogs' comes because when it rained hard cats and dogs fell off the roof. Complete twaddle, of course. (Dogs live on the roof?). A phrase like it was used in 1653. Someone wrote 'it shall rain dogs and polecats'. The modern phrase was first used in 1738 when Jonathan Swift wrote: 'he was sure it would rain cats and dogs'. The truth is nobody knows why this odd phrase began. Maybe it was just a joke.

Women in Nabatea

The Nabatean Kingdom existed in what is now Jordan and northwest Saudi Arabia in the period 168 BC-106 AD. In Nabatea women were equal to men. They could inherit and sell their property and bring lawsuits. Some Nabatean queens ruled jointly with their husbands and appeared on coins. One famous Nabatean queen was Chuldu. She ruled jointly with her husband in the years 9 AD-16 AD.

The Tomb of Tutankhamun

On 4 November 1922 archaeologist Howard Carter discovered the tomb of Tutankhamun. When you read about Tutankhamun you inevitably hear mumbo jumbo about curses. In fact, most of those involved in excavating the tomb lived for a long time afterward and died in old age. Indeed their average age at death was slightly longer than the average lifespan for the time. It seems that Ancient Egyptian curses are good for your health.

Dr Guillotin

When I was a boy my dad told me that Dr Guillotin invented the guillotine and he was the first person executed by it. He was executed for inventing such an inhumane machine. I thought that was really funny, but of course, it isn’t true. Mechanical beheading devices were used long before the French Revolution. (One was recorded in Dublin in 1307). But in 1790 Joseph-Ignace Guillotin argued that such a device should be used as a humane method of executing people. (And it was humane compared to most methods!) His idea was adopted and the device was named after him. Dr Guillotin died of natural causes in 1838.

The mythical 'curse of Tutankhamun'

One silly and persistent myth is that there was a curse on Tutankhamun's tomb and after it was opened in 1922 there was a series of mysterious deaths. In fact, most of the people involved lived for a long time afterward and were quite old when they died (bearing in mind that life expectancy in the early 20th century was considerably shorter than it is today!). In many cases, they lived longer than would be expected at that time.

Beer Flood

On 17 October 1814 a giant wooden vat of beer in a London brewery burst. The rush of liquid caused other vats to burst in a domino effect. An estimated 135,000 gallons of beer escaped. The sheer weight of beer gushing along the street caused severe damage to several houses. One unfortunate woman was washing pots at a public water pump by a brick wall. The rush of liquid caused the wall to collapse on her. Altogether the flood of beer killed 8 people.

Italy

The first civilization in Italy was the Etruscan, which arose about 800 BC in central Italy. The Etruscans built cities on a grid pattern. Some of these cities still exist (including Arezzo, Chiusi, Cortona, Perugia, and Cerveteri). The Etruscans were also engineers who drained marshes and built roads. They were also skilled artists. The Etruscans made terracotta sculptures and worked in bronze. Their craftsmen also made jewelry of gold and silver.

Hornchurch

Hornchurch began as a small village in Essex. It was not mentioned in the Domesday Book of 1086 but there might have been a tiny hamlet at Hornchurch at that time. Certainly, a village grew up at Hornchurch by the middle of the 12th century. By about 1163 a church had been built at Hornchurch on the site of the present St Andrew’s Church.

In the early 13th century it was called the Horned Church. We do not know why it was called the Horn Church. Perhaps the church building had metal gutters that reminded people of horns. At any rate, the church gave the village of Hornchurch its name.

On 13 July 1955 Ruth Ellis became the last woman in Britain to be hanged. (She shot her former lover David Blakely). Her execution was controversial and added to the debate about the death penalty. In 2003 her relative appealed. But the Court of Appeal judges said there were no grounds for an appeal. She was properly convicted of murder according to the law at that time. And like it or not, hanging was the legal penalty for murder in 1955. My history of capital punishment

Today the world is a much better place than when I was a boy in the 1970s. In the west, society has become more humane, kinder, and much more tolerant.
